Lester Hodge, with Kershaw County EMS, checks Marty Trimnal’s blood pressure.

Wednesday, Steeplechase Apartments held a health fair for residents. Approximately 50 residents and their children came out to participate in health screenings, receive insurance information and make jewelry.

Debbie McGinnis, assistance district manager of Boyd Management, wanted to host the event to give residents access to the different vendors.

"I knew there would be a chance to get residents with EMS, the fire department, medical people and insurance people. It was a good opportunity to pull them all together for something like that," said McGinnis.

The Camden Fire Department brought coloring pages, crayons and stickers for the children. Firefighters Brian Price and Trent Henderson showed residents the fire engine and equipment.

"The firefighters always get a good reception. One firefighter dressed in full gear and they did tours of the fire truck. They opened every single compartment," said McGinnis.

KershawHealth EMS brought an ambulance and offered blood pressure screenings.

"EMS was gracious enough to bring their monitoring equipment for blood pressure and to check other vitals," said McGinnis.

McGinnis thought that the health fair had a postive reception and plans to hosts another. "Next time, we want to open it up to people who aren’t residents," said McGinnis.

(The online version of this story has been updated to correctly identify the county's emeregency services as KershawHealth EMS and to correctly identify an EMS worker in the accompanying photograph as Lester Hodge. The misidentification took place due to information provided to us by fair organizers. The C-I regrets the errors and is printing a correction in our Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, edition.)
