Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) band members are setting their sights on making state finals this year. To get there, members have to dedicate more than eight hours a week practicing and perfecting band routines.

"I’m looking forward to winning state finals, I think we have a very good chance," said band member James Carraway.

Senior Jade Buchman, who plays clarinet, has been in the L-EHS band all four years of her high school career. Buchman credits the band to helping her through a difficult time when she lost her home to a fire in the ninth grade. By 9 a.m. the following day, band parents had already gathered clothes for her.

"I went to Saturday practice the next day -- I was just a freshman so it really stuck with me, the ability to have that connection with people. Without that connection the band would fall apart," said Buchman.

Twelve-year-old Alex Joyner is planning to join the L-EHS band as a freshman next year. Alex has already gotten a head start by being selected to join the band’s pit crew.

"I play the trumpet in the middle school band. Mr. Price (L-EHS band director) asked if I wanted to be in the pit crew. I play percussion in the pits," said Alex.

Band members made note of changes this year for the L-EHS band.

"The amount of freshmen have gone up so we have a younger band," said Carraway.

Sophomore Samuel Campbell notes that the band is working on improving their marching technique while Buchman notices more discipline during practice.

"Practice on the field is absolutely silent. There is a change in how we present ourselves, in how we stand," said Buchman.

Like other members, Buchman hopes to make it to the state level.

"It’s what I’m pulling for, every senior wants that. We really have been working hard to get to that point," said Buchman.
