Derrick Proctor recently announced his intention to run for election to the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees Seat No. 3.

A special election is set for Sept. 18 to fill the seat held by the late Joey Dorton.

Proctor said he has always had a desire to serve on the school board, and feels it is one way he can build a better community for others. He originally submitted his name to Kershaw County Council for a special appointment to the seat in 2003. However, he gave his support to Dorton when Dorton shared his intention to run for election to the seat. Proctor said Dorton contacted him this March about the possibly of him running for Seat 3.

“I felt honored Joey was interested in me for the school board seat he held,” Proctor said.

Proctor said he did not feel the timing was exactly right in March, but feels strongly now he is ready to step up to the challenge after Dorton’s untimely death.

“I love Kershaw County and want to be a part of making it better for my children and others,” he said.

A life-long native of Kershaw County, Proctor attended the West Wateree schools where he graduated in 1980 from Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS). He is active in the community through his church, New Life Christian Outreach. Proctor said L-EHS has been a focus of his work in the community. He is the past president and vice-president of the ABLE Club, past member of the School Improvement Council and actively participated in the long-range planning of the school district’s Facilities Equalization Program.

Proctor and his wife, Rhoda, have three children, Jonathan, 24; Brice, 21; and Megan, 17. Proctor expressed his gratitude for his family, life, career and friendships, now he would like to pay it forward by serving on the school board.
