Rita Cowan Gunter left this life Friday, September 7, 2012, excited about getting to her heavenly home and seeing her family who has gone before her.  She was disappointed about leaving her family here behind, but they take comfort in the promises of our Savior, Lord Jesus, that He has prepared a place for all who believe.

She was born in May of 1950 to Clifton Odell and Juanita Irvin Cowan and was raised in Blackville, SC and Augusta, GA.  She moved to Camden, SC  in 1965 and graduated from Camden High School in 1968.  She married her high school sweetheart, Keith Gunter, that same year and took on the task of trying to raise him up properly.  Then before long, there came five other unruly children to contend with – four girls and one boy, all who have met or exceeded expectations except for her husband, which is still a work in progress.  They are as follows:  Augusto and Kristin Gunter Chavez, Rev. Jed and Dr. Erin Gunter Bryant, Brian and Molly Gunter Reynolds, Kyle and Emily Gunter Outen and Adam Clifton Gunter, all of the Camden/Cassatt, SC community.  Her grandchildren were her greatest joy.  They are: Taylor Jernigan, Jared Chavez, Caroline Chavez, Abby Reynolds, Natalie Reynolds, Julius Reynolds, Keith Outen, Alex Outen, Manley Outen and Clifton (Bo) Gunter.

She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Ben Cowan of Lugoff, SC.

She loved nature and, together we saw some amazing things in this swamp where we reside. I have sat and stared at her many times over the years, mesmerized by how beautiful she was, wondering how she could have fallen in love with a mill hill roughneck with broken teeth.  She would say, “What are you staring at?” And, I would reply, “You are so beautiful.”  She would smile and roll those green eyes.  She loved me like no other ever will.  She told me that she forgave all my sins.  I, in turn, worshiped the ground she walked on.  When she passed away early Friday morning, I combed her hair, put on her lipstick and makeup, then sat down beside her bed. One last time, I let my eyes dwell on that face.  She was more beautiful than I ever remember - that perfect nose, those high cheek bones and full lips, a refined beauty that is most rare.  I do not see how I will ever survive without her, but we leave her in God’s hand, the One who knew us before the foundation of the earth was formed.  We, her friends and family, fall prostrate at Jesus’ feet, reaching for the hem of His robe. For by His stripes we are healed and by His blood, redeemed.  I recognize, what the scripture meant when it said – and now, only these three remain:  Faith, Hope and Love, and the greatest of these is Love.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Rita Cowan Gunter will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Cassatt Baptist Church.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Reverend Jed Bryant and Reverend Don Coppage will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel.
