What was a forgettable Friday night for Kershaw County football teams did not get any better on Saturday afternoon as the visiting Carolina Pride shut out host Camden Military Academy, 50-0.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 0-5 on the season heading into this week’s bye week.
CMA head coach Will Rice did nothing to sugar coat the defeat in summing this one up succinctly.
“They dominated both lines of scrimmage. That was the story of the game,” Rice said. “They were just huge up from on. They pounded us and just wore us down.”
The Spartans had just one scoring threat in this game which came after a reverse landed the hosts at the Pride five yard line. But that would be as close as they would get as they were turned back by the Pride defense.
The guests used the ground game to open things up in the air. But, Rice said, most of the damage came in the rushing attack.
“They hit some passes,” he said, “but it all started up front for them and running the football. They set up the pass with their being able to run the ball.”
The visitors were also able to shut down CHS tailback Ange Gadji, who found little to no room to maneuver against a bunched-up defense.
“They put nine players in the box and manned up on our receivers. We couldn’t throw the ball,” Rice said.
Before the Spartans play their final three games of the season, starting with the final home game of the year against the Raleigh Titans on Oct. 13, they will have this weekend off as the school takes its annual fall break. Rice said the time off comes at a good time for his troops.
“It might be good for our guys to get away from it all for a little while,” he said. “Then, we when come back, they should be ready to get back to work.”
