My name is Kershaw County. I am located in the state of South Carolina and I possess approximately 740 square miles, and I claim to have approximately 60,000 citizens that live in me. I have a lot to boast about, so much that I cannot begin to tell of them. I am proud of my citizens and I depend on them to make me what I am. I am only as good as my people. That I know!

I, Kershaw, am very proud of myself, from my coast to my mountains. I have beautiful horse barns and farms. My sport hunting and fishing are second to none. My massive patriotic history still enflames my citizens. Again, my citizens are what makes me! I brag of them because they deserve it.

There are times that I, Kershaw, need a little help, too. By no means am I perfect, and I don’t ever intend to be. I must reach out to secure a positive change or two. I must do one of two things: either fix what isn’t right, or live with it. A good example is my sheriff’s department. You see, someone came along and my citizens elected him sheriff. Now I consider that part of me repaired and I am happy with my sheriff’s department. Again, it is my citizens!

I, Kershaw, look constantly in my daily mirror. Though I am very proud, I will say that I am a little embarrassed in a few areas. Recently, I have learned that my Democratic Party allows its candidates (which are my citizens) to knowingly break its rules and ethical guidelines. It is now OK to disregard the rules yet be part of my county council decision making process. Wow! This really happened to me. I hope my neighboring counties aren’t laughing at me. I have learned that supposedly professional employees can lower themselves to the point of immeasurable immaturity and sue other very mature and ethical county elected officials for remarks that are absolutely truthful and professional. I am embarrassed of the foolish reactions from some of my courthouse officials who indeed are supposed to be both ethical and professional themselves.

You see, I am Kershaw, Kershaw County! I admire myself! I need my citizens to inspire the looks and facts about me. I exist in a vast and beautiful area, and I am proud and eager. I want my children to love me even more. I know that within myself, there are these minor but stubborn roadblocks and that they, in short term, are easily rid of. I thank my good citizens for making me the best county in the state. Help me become better. My citizens are the best, so hang on and hold on tight. I, Kershaw, thank you.
