Council's actions disappointing

As a retired educator I am very disappointed with a couple of decisions that the Kershaw County Council has made.
Considering these decisions makes me wonder which they consider more important. Last week they failed to provide the funding requested by the Kershaw County School District.

Recently, however, they voted to increase the fees for garbage/trash.  Which is more important, money for the education of our children or money for garbage?  The council’s actions speak loud and clear.

The Chamber of Commerce did a survey for the council.  If the Chronicle-Independent was accurate in their reporting the survey question was basically, do you want a tax increase yes or no?  No other information was provided.  To say the least it appears to me that this is a biased survey.

Even with that, only about 7% of the Chamber’s total contacts responded no.  It appears that the council then used this information to deny the request.

By the way, did the Council request any input regarding the fee for garbage?

I know this wasn’t a tax but a fee, which according to almost everyone is the worst kind of tax.  They did raise my taxes, even though by a different name, in this recession that we are in.

If the general public has less money to spend locally, will this help the businesses in the community?

Once again, it appears that the Kershaw County Council thinks that money for garbage is more important than money for education.  Look at the I-95 corridor and notice that without appropriate education economic development doesn’t occur.

Our young people of today will be our leaders of tomorrow.  Without the proper education how can we expect them to lead us in such a way that will produce a better community here in Kershaw County?
