Rizers to call Camden home

ABA franchise opens inaugural campaign on Friday

When North Central High graduate Devin Lee and his wife and Lugoff-Elgin graduate, Nikia Knox-Lee, purchased the Palmetto State Rizers, they said it was important that they try and give the American Basketball Association franchise a presence in their home county.
The Lees did more than just that. They made Camden home for the first-year team’s home games.
Aside from Friday’s season opener with the East Point (Ga.) Jaguars, to be played inside the Camden High gym, the Rizers’ remaining nine home games will be played at E. Clarkson Rhame City Arena on Broad Street in Camden.
Former Camden High School and Jacksonville University standout Harvin Council was named as the team’s head coach in the summer. The decision to play the Rizers’ home games in Camden was made earlier this month.
Since the basketball court as Rhame City Arena has yet to be laid down, it necessitated the move for the franchise’s first game to be played at Camden High. Tip-off for Friday night’s game is set for 7 p.m. inside The Dog Pound.
Lee will sign the players on the Rizers’ 13-man roster to their contracts as part of a pre-game ceremony.
Tickets for Friday’s contest are $10 for adults, $5 for students ages seven and older and free for children ages seven and under. Tickets will be on sale at the door on Friday night and may also be purchased online at wewillrize.ticketleap.com.
In addition to the Lees’ and Council’s local connections, a pair of Rizers have local ties. Artrell Addison is a guard who played football and basketball at Camden High School, while 6-foot-6 post player Earl Johnson was a member of Lugoff-Elgin’s 2002-03 squad which won the AAA Upper State championship.
Another player on the roster is 6-foot-9, 245-pound center and former Belmont Abbey standout, Kyle Phillips, who was brought in for a pre-draft workout by the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats.
A complete outlook for the Rizers is scheduled to be included in Friday’s edition of the Chronicle-Independent.
Here is the team’s regular season schedule, with home games in bold. All games have a 7 p.m. tip-off, unless indicated otherwise.
