was one of two members who were re-elected to the National Steeplechase Association Board of Directors, along with two current directors who were re-elected. Results of the balloting were announced at the NSA’s annual meeting in Camden, on Nov. 16.
Joining the board to serve three-year terms are R. Reynolds Cowles Jr., D.V.M., Charles E. Noell, and Sharon E. Sheppard. Re-elected were M. Nixon Ellis and Shull. The new board members succeed NSA Chairman Beverly R. Steinman and NSA Secretary Dwight Hall, who served two three-year terms and were not eligible for re-election. Board member Richard Hutchinson did not stand for re-election.
A horse owner, Shull has served as president of the Steeplechase Owners and Trainers Association. She also is a director of the Carolina Cup Racing Association, which annually stages the Carolina Cup in the spring and the Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup each fall. She is the daughter of former Carolina Cup Racing Association Director and steeplechase horseman Dale Thiel.
Reynolds Cowles was the founder of Blue Ridge Equine Clinic in Earlysville, Va. He and his wife, Evie, have owned and raced steeplechase horses for 30 years. He will serve on the NSA’s Steeplechase Safety Task Force, as will Dwight Hall.
Charlie Noell is a long-time bond dealer and private-equity partner who resides at Merriefield Farm in Monkton, Md., with his wife, Barbara Voss. In the name of Merrifield Farm, they raced 2011 timber champion Bon Caddo.
Sharon Sheppard has been an active steeplechase owner for almost 25 years. She was a founding member of the National Steeplechase Foundation and has served as a board member of the Steeplechase Owners and Trainers Association. She and her husband, Peter, reside in Hanover, Pa.
After almost 30 years in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, Nick Ellis now concentrates on equine activities. He is executive director of the Carolina Horse Park Foundation and served as chairman of the Carolina Horse Park, where the Stoneybrook Steeplechase is held each spring. He and his wife, Effie, live in Southern Pines, N.C.
NSA President Guy J. Torsilieri welcomed the new members to the Board of Directors and thanked the outgoing directors for their years of service.
“Peggy Steinman’s contributions to American Steeplechasing are all but inestimable,” he said of Steinman, who is currently the chairman of the Carolina Cup Racing Association. “In so many ways, she is a leader of our sport. When something needs to be done, Peggy is always the first person who comes to mind, and she always delivers.
“Dwight Hall has provided invaluable service to the NSA over the past six years, and as chairman of the Stewards Advisory Committee has overseen an upgrading of our officiating standards,” Torsilieri said of Hutchinson. “Richard Hutchinson has provided us with the steeplechase enthusiast’s viewpoint, and we thank him for his service on the board’s membership committee.”
