The Kershaw County School District will dedicate a walkway near Jackson School and honor two retiring school board members Tuesday.

The first event -- the dedication of the walkway behind Jackson School -- will begin at 4:30 p.m.

The land for the walkway was donated by former KCSD teacher Deloris Drakeford and her husband Paul Drakeford. Mrs. Drakeford began her career with KCSD as an instructional assistant in 1973 where she worked at Pine Tree Hill Elementary, Baron DeKalb Elementary and Camden Elementary. After earning her teaching credentials, she returned as a teacher at Bethune Elementary, Bethune High, North Central High and North Central Middle. She passed away in August 2011.

The walkway will connect the Fairfax neighborhood with the campus of Jackson School, making it much easier and safer for students walking to and from school. A commemorative marker will be unveiled at the dedication ceremony.

Following the walkway dedication, two members of the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees who are retiring will be honored with a 5 p.m. reception in the media center at Jackson School. Carol Thompson started serving on the school board in 1996, and Jim Smith joined her in 2001. They have the longest terms of service of any current school board members.

The public is invited to attend both ceremonies. Following the reception, the December meeting of the Kershaw County School Board will begin at 6 p.m. in the multipurpose room of Jackson School.
