At a time now, more than ever, we appreciate and realize how precious children and their teachers of our community are. With the tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary and the holidays around the corner, we can all use a little hope -- and thanks to the Montessori School of Camden and their inspirational children and teachers, there is hope for us and the animals this holiday season.

Each year the school participates in a community service project, and teachers Chrissy Muehlbauer and Meredith Hines with their infant and toddler classes, raised more than $330 for the Meyer-Thiel Animal Adoption Center and donated much needed items from the shelter’s wish list. Both teachers said it was an easy decision choosing the shelter.

“A lot of the children have pets at home, and with two rescues dogs of my own, this was a cause we are all excited about,” Muehlbauer said.

An essential part of a Montessori education is beginning to realize compassion for others. One way that our children experience compassion is through service projects to benefit others.

“It was a cool experience to see the kids get behind a project and really make it their own” said Muehlbauer.

The Lower Elementary children took it upon themselves to hold a bake sale twice a week for the month of November to raise funds to be matched for the new animal shelter. This was the first time the animal shelter was selected and it was such a positive experience for all involved, there’s talk of making it an annual tradition.
