Leftovers

It’s a tradition.  There is turkey for Thanksgiving.  This old bird brings with it several questions.    How big must it be to serve everybody?  Will it be stuffed?  What will we stuff it with?  Is it safe to stuff a turkey?   Will we have dressing baked beside the bird and not stuff it at all?  How do you cook it?  How do we know if it is done?  Who will carve it?

Thanksgiving has come and gone.  The big question now is – what shall we do with the leftovers?  Football games in the afternoon go better with turkey sandwiches!  After a while, we have to “hide” the turkey in other foods.  There are turkey soup and turkey casseroles.  There’s turkey pot pie and turkey salad.  The secret is to use it all up.  Or we can freeze some of the leftovers.  Some of us want to start all over with another turkey for Christmas!

One year, we forgot to clean up the turkey roaster.  When it was time to put it up, the turkey bones were still waiting.  We slipped out the back door, while the rest of the family watched football.  We took a shovel and buried those poor, stinking bones.  Not good!  Good, meaty turkey bones can be cooked to make a great soup stock!

Word List: tradition,  leftovers,  casseroles,  roaster.
