This is hardly the time for a hiccup and the Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team may have avoided one on a night in which they were not at full strength.
Last Wednesday, the eighth-ranked Demons got past visiting White Knoll, which is ranked 18th in the most recent scmat.com poll, 43-26.
The victory came on the heels of a three-match sweep in a four-team event held at Bamberg-Ehrhardt in which the Demons defeated the host Red Raiders, 46-29, before shutting out Cross, 82-0, and Orangeburg Prep, 84-0. L-E’s scheduled match at Sumter, which was to have included Dreher, was cancelled.
The four wins gave Evan Moxie’s charges a 12-3 record in dual matches as they headed into this past weekend’s Battery Creek Duals in Beaufort.
The victory over White Knoll saw L-E head coach Evan Moxie forced to shake his rotation up, but the Demons were still able to come away with the win.
“We had some kids out of the line-up for different reasons and had to ask some of our younger kids to step up and fill in for them,” Moxie said. “Even though we got the win, we did not wrestle up to our standards and the kids know that.”
The Region 4-4A duals, which will decide which teams earn a berth in next week’s state tournament, are on the docket for Saturday at Irmo High School. Moxie said that for the Demons to have an extended stay in the post-season, they need to work out the kinks over the new few days.
“At this time of the season,” he said, “we need to be wrestling at our highest level and we did not do that against White Knoll. We have work to do if we are going to put together a run in the playoffs.”
