Emergency crews recovered the body of a 49-year-old man from a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am found in a creek on York Street in Camden, near Pitts Street, Friday afternoon.

Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers identified the man as Barney Joseph Truesdale of Bishopville Highway, Camden. The S.C. Highway Patrol said that, for unknown reasons, traveled off the left hand side of the street, hit a tree, overturned and landed in the creek while traveling north. Truesdale was wearing a seatbelt, according to the SCHP. A wrecker pulled the overturned vehicle out of about three to four inches of water around 1:40 p.m.

Camden Fire Department Chief John Bowers said that when Camden officials got to the scene it was clear they would be working on a recovery effort instead of a rescue effort. Bowers said the car had been there for “a while,” but less than one day. Camden Police Department Chief Joe Floyd and several others managed to get the door of the vehicle open and “feel around” to find one body inside the vehicle, before the wrecker arrived, Bowers said.

A man walking down York Street discovered the car sitting after he saw debris from the car near two trees on the side of the road.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office and SCHP.
