Grant charged in Swainson kidnapping

The Richland County Sheriff Office (RCSO) charged an Elgin man with the kidnapping of a Columbia teen on Friday.

Freddie Grant, 53, of Kelly Road, the sole suspect in connection with the August disappearance of Ridge View High School student Gabrielle Swainson, 15, waived his right to a bond hearing that was scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Last August, the RCSO found hair and blood on duct tape near Grant’s Elgin home with Swainson’s DNA. Last month, Grant, a convicted felon, was found guilty of a federal weapons charge after the RCSD found ammunition in his home while searching for Swainson.

Since his arrest, Grant has been uncooperative in the search for Swainson, who went missing when her mother, Elvia, returned from work around early in the morning of Aug. 18.

RCSO Capt. Chris Cowan said the agency’s case was “parallel to his federal charges, but could not circumvent” the federal charges against Grant.

“It’s just one more step in the process of holding him accountable,” Cowan said of filing the charges against Grant now.

Grant is also suspected in the disappearance of 28-year-old Adriana Diana Laster, who was last seen in September 2011 at Grant’s Kelly Road home.
