KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Former Lugoff-Elgin standout Deral Brown won the 149-pound weight division and was one of a record eight Newberry College wrestlers who qualified for next month’s NCAA Division II National tournament.
The Wolves collected 147.5 team points as they rolled to their sixth straight NCAA Division II Super Region I championship in Keystone Arena last Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown finished in second place with 119 points..
Newberry's eight national qualifiers will participate in the NCAA Division II National Championships Festival in Birmingham, Ala., on March 8-9.
Brown, the nation’s seventh-ranked 149-pounder, took a 10-3 major decision over Pitt-Johnstown’s Jack Bachman in the semifinals then took a 3-2 decision over Seton Hill’s Nick Nichols in the championship bout to earn his second trip to the national tournament. He was also a national qualifier in 2011.
A redshirt senior, Brown has a 138-44 career record, good for second in school history, and his 36 wins by major decision are best in the history of the Wolves’ program.
He signed with Newberry in 2008 after being a three-time state individual champion at L-E under then-head coach Kevin Knoerr.
