Darron Kirkley will be leaving his current position as Kershaw County’s tourism director effective March 15.

“I’m sorry that we’re losing him, I don’t think he’s leaving the community though… I wish him the best and he did a great job while he was here,” said Kershaw County Administrator Vic Carpenter.

Kirkley will be returning to North Central High School where he will resume teaching math and hospitality.

“It’s a personal choice and what I think is the best choice for this time in my life,” Kirkely said.

He also said that though he is leaving, he has enjoyed his position as tourism director.

According to Carpenter, the position will be filled but only after conversing with stakeholders and assessing what has happened in the past year and also receiving additional input on what they have liked and what they have not liked.

“The absolute intention is to fill it [the position] and keep going,” Carpenter said.

A tourism council has already been appointed and will begin meeting soon. Those on the council are Camden City Councilwoman Laurie Parks, Henrietta Hines, Dolly Chewning, Libby Davis, Henry Powers, Vip Patel and Laura Thiel Shull.

Camden City Manager Mel Pearson said the city learned Tuesday that Kirkley was leaving the tourism director position. The position is partially funded by the city and Kirkley’s office is at the city-owned Price House where Camden Economic Development Director Wade Luther also maintains an office.

“That job is very important for tourism and where we want to go in the future. As far as I know, council still believes it will work and will want to participate with that again,” Pearson said.

Kirkley became the county’s first tourism director in July.
