Three members of the West Wateree Wrestling Club (WWWC) earned state championships in the South Carolina Wrestling Association for Youth) state tournament at Eastside High School in Taylors on March 2.
Jordan Smalls, from North Central Middle School, and Lugoff-Elgin Middle School wrestlers Hunter Haven and Dalton Haven were crowned as state champions after having gone undefeated in the tournament.
Finishing as state runners-ups were L-EMS wrestlers Devin Wilson and Taylor Catoe. The local team received a third-place finish from Corey Bledsoe (L-EMS), as well as two fourth place finishes from L-EMS wrestlers Jay Wilson and Caleb Haven.
The WWWC team was coached by Jeremy Cogdill and Tracey “Tick” Wilson.
In addition, Lugoff-Elgin High School junior Chris Jackson won his weight class in the high school division.  In doing so, he defeated Jackson Myers from Lexington in the finals by a score of 7-2.  Myers is a two-time defending 4A state champion.
On Sunday, L-EMS had four wrestlers successfully try out for and make Middle School Team Palmetto.  The four wrestlers, who were each state qualifiers during the middle school season, are seventh grader Devin Wilson (85 lbs.), along with eighth graders Taylor Catoe (120), Dalton Haven (125) and Noah North (130).
Though unable to wrestle off due to an injury, North was selected to the team based on his 31-0 season record and having been a middle school state champion. The four team members represent the most in school history.
Several of these wrestlers from Kershaw County will participate in the individual Middle School Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va., to be held in early April, while Team Palmetto will compete in the Middle School National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa, in late April.
