• Actress Ashley Judd has been fooling around with the idea of running for the U.S. Senate from Kentucky against Mitch McConnell, the minority leader. Apparently she didn’t like what she was seeing in polls, for she announced last week she would not run. Frankly, we’re not disappointed that we won’t be subjected to Judd’s brand of Hollywood wisdom over the next couple of years.

• March has finally departed, and it leaves as one of the coldest Marches on record, with temperatures running far below normal. The thermometer is supposed to dip here again this week, as it is across the eastern United States. We’re ready for spring, and had just as soon see temperatures bounce back up to seasonal levels. Bring on the azaleas and dogwoods!

• There’s been a great deal of publicity about the dangers of texting while driving, but much of the attention has been focused on teenagers. But a recent AT&T survey indicates that texting is a major problem for adults, too, with a higher percentage than teens admitting to the controversial practice. The evidence is startling about the dangers of texting while driving; we’d like to see South Carolina ban it, as 39 states already have done.

• A number of U.S. senators have announced they won’t seek re-election next year, and it’s difficult to mourn the turnover, whether the opposition party gains those seats or they stay in the hands of the current party. The performance of the Senate, and the House, too, is so dismal that the two bodies would probably be better off with all fresh faces. That won’t happen, of course, but it would be nice to think a few people with more centrist views would get elected to the Senate next year.
