Although it’s recorded that in 1759 George Washington purchased such exotic sounding toys as “bird on Bellows, turnabout Parrot, Prussian Dragoon, and Man Smoaking,” mostly the southern colonial Christmas season was a celebration for grown ups. It was a time of merriment and of thanks; a season of feasts, parties, hunts, horse races, cock fights, balls and visiting, highlighted by church services, mainly Church of England, and special customs.
