Sergeant James Steele and Ptl. Tony Wages were honored at the 8th Annual DUI Enforcement Recognition and 2012 Law Enforcement DUI Challenge Ceremonies held on April 3. The program is presented by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety and Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programs.

Wages honored with the 2012 Rookie of the Year award. The Rookie of the Year is an officer or deputy "who has excelled in many areas, such DUI arrests, DUI victims services, anti-underage drinking programs work ethic, etc." Steele was honored with the DUI Bronze Hero award for making 10-24 DUI arrests last year. Wages had the second highest number of DUI arrest at CPD, Lt. Lee Boan said.

"Neither of them is scared to work. They both will get into anything we ask them to," he said.

Although neither Steele nor Wages is assigned to the traffic unit solely, said CPD Chief Joe Floyd, both help patrol the roads in addition to answering calls and completing other duties. Floyd said Steele’s DUI efforts are consistent with previous years. Steele, shift captain, has been with CPD since 2003. Both Steele and Wages are certified in DataMaster, Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (S.F.S.T.), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (A.R.I.D.E.).
