Funeral services to celebrate the life of Hugh J. " Ump Dad" Johnson, Jr., 86, of Camden, will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church. Rev. Steve Patterson and Rev. David Weaver will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military rites. In lieu of visitation, the family will receive friends in the Family Life Center following the committal service. Memorials may be made in Hugh’s memory to the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, 460 S. Fair Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Hugh J. Johnson, Jr., husband of Betty Pate Johnson, was born in Darlington, SC, the son of the late Dr. Hugh J. Johnson and Helen Strange Johnson. Hugh was retired from the US Navy/Reserve after joining the Navy at 17. He was a WWII Navy Veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre stationed on Midway Island. He signed up for V-6 which means Victory plus six months. He was also retired from DuPont and was a member of the American Legion, Lugoff Elks Lodge, former member of the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, the Camden Coin Club and the Revolutionary Re-enactment. He also joined the VFW in 1946, was a former Post Commander and held many State and District positions. Hugh began the Voice of Democracy Program in Kershaw County over 40 years ago and was associated with the Patriot’s Pen Written Essay Program. He was a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church and the Wimberly Sunday School Class.

Besides his wife, Hugh is survived by his daughter, Renee J. Thompson (John), of Camden; granddaughters, Jesseca Camille "Cammy" Thompson, Laurel T. Simmons (Mike), Jonellen T. Edgerton (E.J.), Charleston Hannah Thompson; great-grandchildren, Alexis R. Edgerton, Emily J. Edgerton, Bayne T. Simmons, and Finley C. Simmons.

Besides his parents, Hugh was predeceased by his sisters, Frances Johnson and Jeanne Parrish.
