Bessie D. English

On Friday, April 5, 2013, Mrs.Bessie D. English slipped peacefully into the arms of her loving Savior. She was 94. Mrs. English was born September 29, 1918 in New York City, but lived most of her early years in Franklin, Virginia. She was the daughter of Sr. Lieutenant Clyde Hudson and Bessie May Dougherty and the wife of Matthew D. "Jim" English.

Jim and Bess, as she was lovingly called by her friends, lived in Camden, SC from 1950 until his death in 1973. They were active members of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. For many years, they served as foster parents for 26 different babies needing foster care. After Jim’s death, Bess spent 7 years doing mission work among the Jews in Jerusalem. For the past 15 years, she has resided at Presbyterian Home of Clinton.

Mrs. English is survived by a sister, Barbara (Dave) Puterbaugh of Dayton, Ohio, two daughters, Cynthia Rusher of Camden and Christyann English of Batesburg, SC, and a son, Fred (Karen) English of Charlotte, NC. She also has two grandchildren, Melissa English Demastes and Matthew Rusher, and three great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim; 2 grandsons, Trey Rusher and Shannon English; and a great granddaughter.

The family will celebrate her home going with a graveside service to be held at Quaker cemetery on Monday, April 8 at 3:00 in the afternoon. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the missions program at St. Andrews Evangelical Church in Columbia or Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the G-Wing nurses and aides of Presbyterian Home in Clinton, SC for their loving care, especially in her final days.
