Funding the sheriff’s office

On April 1 Sheriff Matthews spoke to the members of the American Legion Post 17. We were amazed that the sheriff’s office was able to perform so many functions so well with so few on his staff.

We often asked why you have so few patrolling. Lack of sufficient funding, was the response. I recall that on an average day there are only two deputies to patrol and respond to calls on each side of the river.

Consider this situation. There is a domestic problem located on the Wateree below Liberty Hill. Both deputies must respond. A call comes that there is a major problem at North Central. If the deputies abandon the domestic call and rush to North Central, it will take them over 30 minutes to reach the school. Will this be acceptable?

One of the many functions demanded of sheriffs is to provide adequate protection to the citizens of their county.

The responsibility of providing proper protection to our county rests upon the shoulders of our county council. With limited funding the hands of our protection is quite limited. Sixty thousand citizens of Kershaw County who reside beyond municipal limits depend solely upon the sheriff for help in time of need. Our council should realize its priority list, and do its proper job for the 60,000 scattered throughout these many square miles.
