Spend money on children, not bureaucrats

The school board has plans now to spend $1.25 million of the IPP funds to buy the Howden-Buffalo office building (the old Builders Transport building on U.S. 1 in Camden, near Wal-Mart) for a new administrative office complex. We just have a few questions for the board.

Who owns the buildings and who is brokering the deal for us to buy it? How much will renovations cost taxpayers? Why in the world, with available vacant schools, would they buy more property for another district office? The old Pine Tree Hill property is still just sitting there. Why can’t that be used? Why can’t Camden Middle on Laurens Street be used? There’s the band room, newly renovated cafeteria, gym, auditorium, all that could be used. Already there have been two developers who backed out of buying that property because of high development costs.

Why shouldn’t taxpayers of this county demand that the superintendent and school board use those abandoned facilities before they purchase additional buildings at a cost of over $1 million! Why shouldn’t we demand that they use the IPP funds -- a debt that has to be paid by Kershaw County citizens -- for schools that need additions and renovations? Why shouldn’t we force the school board to spend money on the children rather than the bureaucrats?
