Handle with care

This is a particularly precarious time for health care; there are many uncertainties, many worries. The current antagonistic verbiage between members of Kershaw County Council and KershawHealth has added to my concerns about this community’s health care future.

May I take this podium to urge all parties in conflict to maintain civility and common courtesies and, most importantly, to respect our community’s common welfare while in discourse. Base the discussion and evaluation of issues and certainly any subsequent decision making on factual information only. Make every effort to uncover the historical context(s) of decisions made in the past. Translate, as much as possible, past decisions onto current and future health care needs of the community.

Be reminded that, as hospital trustees and council members, you must attempt to represent the summation of interests of the entire populace of our community, not perspectives of special interest groups nor specific health care subgroups, nor even your own personal inclinations.

Be certain that you make every effort to understand current national health care economics and its complex implications for this local community.

Seek understanding of the opposing viewpoint on whatever matter! The opposition position on any matter arises from “somewhere.” Despite what might appear to you as irrational, there is some reason behind it, especially if it is offered in a conflicting tone or manner. Find out the issue; discuss it candidly. And, please leave political and/or personal agendas out of the mix.

Our community and our community’s health services need your utmost wisdom and clarity of thought. Be aware that conflict, per se, can have undesirable devastating and destructible long-term impacts on all parties -- the individuals, the institutions, and, most worrisome, on the community at large.

Please ... handle with care!
