Led by three goals each from senior striker Jazzmine Devlin and junior Jordan Woody, the Camden girls’ soccer team blitzed host Lower Richland, 9-0, last Thursday night in Hopkins.
The win gave the Lady Bulldogs an 11-5 overall record and 4-3 in Region 4-AAA play.
Devlin’s three goals gives her 71 in her four-year career, placing her just 11 behind current Furman midfielder India Robinson for second on the school’s all-time scoring list and 13 behind former Lady Bulldog star Tina Stokes’ school record.
Senior Katie Tiller and junior midfielder Maggie Wehunt each added second half goals as did freshman Margaret Guy in Thursday’s rout.
“Our girls played well and now our focus is turned to our final three region games as we find ourselves in a three-way tie for second place,” said CHS head coach Stephen Sutusky.
Camden’s defense did not allow a shot on goal by Lower Richland. Earning assists in the game were Wehunt and Tiller, with two each, while Serena Hayes, Breanna Barnes, Dree Dubose and Devlin added one each.
“Our girls really moved the ball well, like we’ve been working on in practice,” Sutusky said. “And despite not scoring, I must really praise the efforts of Madison Woody, Margeaux Laschanzky and Katie Morris who all played well in the field for us.”
Two nights earlier, region-leading and third-ranked A.C. Flora defeated Camden, 3-1, in a game in which Camden had several scoring chances.
Devlin gave the Lady Dogs a 1-0 lead at the 11 minute mark as on counter attack, Madison Woody, Barnes and Tiller moved the ball forward for Devlin to dribble some 20 yards before rifling a shot to the left corner past Flora keeper Clarissa Gold. Some 15 minutes later, the score would even out after a Camden defensive mishap resulted in an own goal.
“It was very fluke as there was absolutely no pressure being applied by Flora at the time,” Sutusky said of the tying goal. “It was just one of those miss hits that just happen.”
With the score even at halftime, Flora took the lead for keeps three minutes into the second half when Irina Briquet scored her first of two goals. With 18 minutes to play, the Lady Falcons extended the lead to a two-goal advantage as Briquet knocked home a goal on a ball that the Camden failed to clear from its zone.
“Our girls played a solid all-around game,” Sutusky said. “We had a few hiccups and an own goal, but we held our own against a quality opponent.”
Sutusky lauded the efforts of his girls who were playing without three injured starters in Owens Morgan, Kayla Wallace and Sarah Anne Semple.  “Right now,” he said, “I’m hoping Murphy (CHS trainer Stephen) can work a few miracles and get these girls back sooner than later as we have some important games in the next few weeks.”
Be a Lady Bulldog for a day set:  The CHS girls’ soccer team is inviting all Camden area elementary aged girls to attend “Varsity for a Day” event at Zemp Stadium from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs’ varsity team members and coaching staff will provide soccer instruction, snack, and fun to all girls interested in seeing what it is like to be on the varsity soccer team for a day.
Those that attend will be given free admission into the following evening’s home game against Westwood and will take part in the announcing of starting lineups before the 7 p.m. match.
