Sandra Thomas said it only took her about 20 minutes to write her childrens book entitled "Grandma’s Here."

Thomas is a first time grandmother who refers to her granddaughter as the "joy of my heart."

"I created the book as a way to leave something for her," Thomas said.

The illustrations for "Grandma’s Here" were created by an illustrator who Thomas said she never even met in person. Thomas said he created the illustrations based on various emails and phone calls they had with one another.

Thomas said the illustrator managed to create exactly what she envisioned.

"I wanted the illustrations to be bright and colorful," Thomas said. "And he created exactly what I had in mind."

Thomas used Soar Publishing to publish "Grandma’s Here."

Thomas is a native of Kershaw County, growing up in Elgin, but now resides in Columbia although her family and friends still live in the county.

Thomas wished to give something back to the community she calls home and found a way to do so by donating "Grandma’s Here" to Kershaw County schools.

She said she contacted Julie Putnam, Kershaw County School District (KCSD) multimedia coordinator, who then had to approve the book before it could be donated.

Putnam approved the book, which is now set to appear in 11 of KCSD’s elementary school libraries in the near future.

Thomas said this is the first of many childrens books that she plans to write after she retires soon.

Thomas will appear at a book signing for "Grandma’s Here" May 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Books on Broad, located at 944 Broad St. in Camden.

"I hope to inspire and encourage others," Thomas said.
