An unidentified man’s decision to walk into an unauthorized area of a check cashing business in Camden brought a large response from Camden officers and county deputies Friday afternoon.

Camden Police Department (CPD) officers and Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies responded to Camden Check Into Cash at the corner of East DeKalb and Fair streets. The CPD asked the KCSO to bring a K-9 dog to the scene in an attempt to search for the man.

According to CPD Capt. Mike Stone, the man walked into the building before 12:30 p.m. and headed toward the back of the business, causing a female store employee to scream loudly. Stone said she ran into a bathroom and locked the door. The employee screamed loud enough that the neighboring business heard her, which caused the man to flee, he said. He said the man did not say anything to the woman indicating that he was attempting to rob the store. Stone said officers determined the man did not take anything.

The clerk, who is pregnant, called the CPD from the bathroom. She was not injured, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Stone said.

Stone said it is standard procedure to call for a dog in an “attempted” robbery. The dog was unable to find a track, which led CPD and Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, who helped at the scene, to believe the man left in a vehicle. It is unknown what type of vehicle the man was driving.
