A one-run loss to Pelion prevented the North Central softball team from winning the Region 3-AA title, but it could not put a damper on what to this point has been a successful regular season.
The Lady Knights ended the regular season with an 8-6 record and an 8-2 mark in conference play. Now comes the second season, the AA state playoffs. The Lady Knights will host Buford Thursday at 6 p.m. in Boonetown. “We will continue to play hard and see how far we can go in the playoffs,” said NC head coach Mike Grigsby.
Last Monday, NC traveled to Pelion with a chance to end up in a tie for first place in 3-AA only for the visitors to come out on the short end of a 12-11 decision.
Trailing, 8-4, in the top of the seventh, North Central scored seven runs to take an 11-8 lead. Pelion, however, came back to end the Lady Knights’ hopes of a conference title by scoring four runs of its own and win the game.
Tuesday’s night game was important for Grigsby and company as they were playing Fairfield Central for second place and a first round state playoff home game.  The Lady Knights came away with a 14-9 win thanks in part to the hitting of Alexis Baker, Jo Phillips, Logan Coates, Lexy McCain and Kelsie Gardner who all had multiple hits and scored and drove in the runs needed for the victory.
NC closed out the regular season with a 13-3 non-region loss to Buford, in a preview of Thursday’s state playoff opener. The game was close until the bottom of the fourth when Buford scored five runs to break out to a 9-3 lead.  Stephanie Freeman had a bases-loaded double to drive in all three of the Lady Knights’ runs in the top of the fourth but the guests were unable to get back on the scoreboard the rest of the game.
