The Camden Archives and Museum received an Award of Achievement at the S.C. Federal of Museums’ (SCFM) annual meeting, held in March in Greenwood. The award recognized the "excellent utilization of resources and professionalism" for the archives’ "Camden’s Baseball Hall of Famer: Larry Doby" exhibit and associated programming. The exhibit ran from July 2 to Dec. 31, 2012, in the Whitely Room and drew much praise from those who viewed it.

Doby was born in Camden and learned to play baseball here, both from his baseball player father and from a coach at Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy. He moved to Paterson, N.J., when he was 14, but always recognized Camden as his hometown. The second African-American drafted into professional baseball, Doby followed Jackie Robinson into the professional leagues by a mere 11 weeks, joining the Cleveland Indians in the American League in 1947. Doby was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.

The SCFM was established in 1971 as a professional membership organization whose purpose is to represent and act in the best interest of museums in South Carolina and to raise the standards of museum practice in the state. The Camden Archives and Museum is a department of the city of Camden.
