Medicaid expansion a moral issue

The Republican state legislators in our state should take the lead in expanding Medicaid, the government-run health insurance program. Our governor, Nikki Haley, should do the same.

This is a moral issue.

When one explores the Hall of Memories, some moments cannot be forgotten or dimmed by the passage of time.

Gov. Haley recently bad-mouthed our citizens who are on food stamps. Shame on her.

I truly thank God on a daily basis for our faith community workers here in Kershaw County who work hard to serve the poor families and the most vulnerable, but we can move it along.

There is no moral basis for catering to special interests while harming the poor.

In fact, my faith tells me that it is our calling to care for the “least of these” first. Otherwise, who will pay? We pay! These would likely be additional hardships placed on the back of fees, placed on our educational and hospital systems and on the working class in the form of regressive taxes and cuts in vital services.

The so-called Republican state legislators and Gov. Nikki Haley, who do not want to the federal Medicaid expansion to pass -- the concerned citizens of South Carolina should firmly and soundly discipline them by having them lose the next election to people who will understand the will of their constituents.
