Kershaw County Treasurer Steve Vincent is at home recovering from burns he received April 19, according to County Administrator Vic Carpenter.

Carpenter said Vincent was volunteering at a Relay for Life event April 19 at the Kershaw County Government Center when he was burned while operating a grill during the cookout. According to Carpenter, Vincent received second- and third-degree burns to his face, arms and legs.

Kershaw County Councilman Jimmy Jones said Vincent had lit the grill and gone inside the government center. When he returned, Jones said, Vincent noticed the flame had not caught. He then opened the lid to relight the grill when the flames flared up.

“I’m just so thankful he wasn’t injured any worse than he was. He’s always giving back to our community and that’s what he was doing when he was injured,” Jones said. “He’s just a great, great guy.”

Jones said it is his understanding that Vincent will make a full recovery.

Carpenter said Vincent was taken to the Augusta Burn Center for treatment and is now back home recovering.

Council Vice Chair Stephen Smoak closed council’s April 23 by asking council and members of the community to keep Vincent in their thoughts and prayers while recovering from the accident. Carpenter said while Vincent, an elected official, is recovering, Deputy Treasurer Jill Catoe, a county employee will act as treasurer.
