The week of May 12 through May 18 was recognized as National Nursing Home Week by Camden Mayor Tony Scully.

Nursing homes throughout the community celebrated their residence in various ways. Springdale Health Care Center in Camden started off the week with a ribbon cutting ceremony performed by Mayor Scully on Monday.

Afterwards residents enjoyed a breakfast prepared by Agape Senior Services.

Springdale Health Care also held a cookout Friday for residence and other visitors.

KershawHealth’s Karesh Wing also participated in the week’s festivities.

Some events that took place at the Karesh Wing included a light show on Tuesday night and a visit around the world Thursday afternoon.

Residents were given passports and then enjoyed an afternoon of food, live entertainment and fellowship on the Karesh Wing Patio.

Some of the entertainment included KershawHealth’s Hospice Chaplain Brian Ogburn who played the bagpipes complete with an authentic plaid kilt, the Camden Lugoff Area Shag Society and Kirkland Moroanas playing the flute.

Various foods from around the world were consumed by the residents, staff and visitors including delicacies from the Netherlands, Brazil and Paris.

"This has been a fabulous week," Karesh Wing resident Deet Elliot said. "They’ve really done a beautiful job."

"All of it has been so nice. I’ve enjoyed all of it," Karesh Wing resident Virginia Carroll agreed.

Celena Traynham, ADC, and Zilphia Shepard, Activity Assistant, were the coordinators behind the week-long celebration.

Morningside Nursing Home of Camden participated with a Mother’s Day Celebration Sunday. There was live music, fine china, prime rib and all the mothers received gifts.

A special award was also given for the "Eldest Mother Award."
