Although hurricane season does not officially begin until June, Camden’s own Charlie Company and the SC National Guard recently underwent training in the event that a large scale storm or other disaster hits our state. From May 16 to 21, the National Guard participated in Ardent Sentry, a major training exercise in South Carolina focused on disaster response and coordination procedures.

Ardent Sentry is officially a DSCA mission, or Defense Support to Civil Authorities, and calls for the mobilization and deployment of forces to assist state and local authorities in response to pre-landfall evacuation of coastal areas, provide critical life support, conduct security operations, facilitate recovery, sustain forces, and transition assigned missions to civil authorities, all while sustaining the public trust. Ardent Sentry was a NORAD- and USNORTHCOM-sponsored exercise involving more than 1,500 S.C. National Guard soldiers and airmen.

As a part of this force, Camden’s Charlie Company plays a significant role. Charlie Company is a member of the 151st Expeditionary Signal Battalion, 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade headquartered in Spartanburg, SC. The unit is a Heavy Signal Company providing phone and internet communications networks through organic tactical satellite assets from anywhere to anywhere in the world. Although most of the company’s experience has been overseas, the unit’s capabilities work well with stateside missions such as Ardent Sentry. Over the course of the week, Charlie Company soldiers provided critical communications capabilities to various transportation, aviation, infantry, and chemical units across much of the state. These communications links are crucial in the event that commercial networks are destroyed.

Due to the size of the exercise, the public likely noticed an increase in military traffic and rotary wing aircraft. This increase in traffic slowed down as the exercise came to a close at the end of the week. As always, Charlie Company and the National Guard appreciate the cooperation and support from the local community. As in all National Guard units, Charlie Company’s strength comes primarily from sharp, dedicated members of the local community. If you, or someone you know, are interested in joining the unit, please call SFC Bowers at 803-299-1305 for information. Charlie Company is located at 1100 Ehrenclou Road in Camden.
