Gayle Pitts and ALPHA Center Executive Director Paul Napperrecently presented the annual Goldbash-Nash Memorial Ride Scholarships to graduating Kershaw County School District seniors at the ALPHA Center. This year’s recipients are Kelly Duncan, Lugoff-Elgin High School ; and Mack Trapp, Camden High School. Accompanying Duncan were ATEC teachers Chet Horton and Jeff Cooper. Trapp’s parents Charlene and Allen Trapp, accompanied their son. The Godbold-Nash Memorial Scholarship is named in memory of Troopers H. Merl Godbold, who was stationed in Kershaw County; and Jonathan Shea Nash, who was escorting the Godbold Memorial Ride on September 19, 2009, when his motorcycle was hit and he was killed. Godbold was killed in the line of duty: he was going to assist another trooper when his patrol car was hit by a drunk driver in February 1992. Both officers were killed on the same highway, U.S. 1. The criteria for the scholarship are as follows: a high school senior, active in community service and must be enrolling in college to go into public service employment. The college can be a two-year or a four- year college.
