A Camden man and his wife were walking back to their car at Antioch Baptist Church’s cemetery off Nursery Road around 4 p.m. Sunday when a man masking his face with a cloth around his head stepped out of a wooded area.

What the suspect didn’t know was that the 82-year-old male victim had a concealed weapons permit -- and a .22 caliber revolver in his pants pocket.

According to a Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) report, when the victim pulled out his gun, the suspect began shooting at him and his 76-year-old wife. The victim returned fire, forcing the suspect to hide behind pine trees. He continued to exchange gunfire with the victim, each firing eight shots, and then retreated back through the woods.

A witness said he saw the suspect get into a car with one or two others inside that had passed him a couple of times earlier before parking near the woods. He described the car as an older model white four-door vehicle with a large black stripe running front to back across the top and trunk lid. The witness said the driver’s side window was broken out and covered with plastic. He also said there was no tag on the car and that it had an “abnormally loud muffler.”

Deputies arriving on the scene had Kershaw County Central Dispatch put out a BOLO, or “be on the lookout,” for the vehicle to surrounding county and city agencies and the S.C. Highway Patrol. Local hospitals were also contacted in the event that the suspect had been wounded.

Two 9mm shell casings were recovered from where the victims said the suspect was when the shooting began.

KCSO Investigator Jamey Jones said a suspect had not been arrested as of Monday afternoon.

“We are working the case,” he said.
