The S.C. State Employees Association (SCSEA) will honor two Kershaw County residents June 8.

The association will recognize Tommy Thompson as a SCSEA 2013 Outstanding State Employee, while Lawter receives the Outstanding State Retiree Award.

The Outstanding State Employee Award is given to two SCSEA members who have rendered unselfish, distinguished and outstanding service to the association and their community during the period of their service as state employees.

Thompson has been employed by the state of South Carolina for 26 years. He currently serves as a Foreman-Trade Specialist IV with the S.C. Department of Transportation (DOT). Thompson is also a certified examiner and administers testing for third party commercial driver’s license at DOT. He also serves as membership chairman for SCSEA’s Kershaw Chapter.

The Outstanding State Retiree award recognizes retirees who continue to render outstanding service to the SCSEA, the state and their communities.

Lawter retired after more than 28 years of service with the Department of Social Services in Kershaw and Richland counties. She has been a member of SCSEA since 1975 and currently serves as SCSEA vice president.

SCSEA Executive Administrator Kim Ames said the recipients were chosen based on nominations by peers and coworkers. The nominations were then submitted to a nomination committee which made the final decision on who to honor.

Thompson and Lawter will be honored at SCSEA’s annual meeting scheduled for June 8 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia. Lt. Governor Glenn McConnell will deliver the keynote address.
