North Central High School senior Grayson King and junior teammate Broderick Gaither were each named to class AA All-State baseball teams.
King, the 2013 Region 3-AA baseball co-player of the year, was named all-state by the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association. He also was an all-state selection, for the second time in as many years, as chosen by the High School Sports Report and by The Diamond Prospects. Gaither was tabbed as an all-state choice by the HSSR.
King, a 6-foot, 200-pound pitcher/infielder/outfielder, closed his senior season with an 8-2 mound mark for Robbie Cash’s Knights, which finished runner-up in Region 3-AA. King threw 57 innings in 11 appearances, allowed 27 hits and 11 earned runs. He also recorded a career-best 100 strikeouts while fashioning a 1.35 earned run average.
At the plate, the Francis Marion University signee hit for a .407 average with 24 hits in 59 at bats. He had seven doubles and a home run while driving in 20 runs. King also had a .576 slugging percentage and a .519 on base mark.
Gaither, a junior outfielder, hung up huge numbers for the Knights this past spring.
Gaither led NC with a .540 batting average in a season in which he had a .810 slugging mark and a .628 on base percentage. In 63 at bats, he had a team-best 34 hits including six doubles, a triple and two home runs while driving in 26 runners, which led the Knights. Gaither also drew 15 walks.
Both King and Gaither are members of the KC Post 17 Senior American Legion team.
