Summer reading fun at the Kershaw County Library

In an effort to encourage reading when school is out, the Kershaw County Library will host its annual summer reading program through August 15.

Children who do not read over the summer typically fall behind by at least one grade level.

While having fun outdoors is a time-honored summer tradition, providing time for read will help make sure that a child returns to the classroom prepared to continue learning.

"Reading doesn’t have to be drudgery," Library Director Amy Schofield said. "Finding the right book, and reading for entertainment is a wonderful pastime for a child. We can offer help finding that book, as well as books on required summer reading lists."

As rewards, children who enroll in the summer reading program are given incentives as they read, including choosing a book of their own to keep.

In addition, programs and events that celebrate reading and culture will be offered at all branches and throughout the community. The summer reading program kickoff was held June 8 at the Kershaw County Farmer’s Market, with kindie rock band Lunch Money performing at 9:30. In addition, the library will host a visit from Cocky’s Reading Express, children’s musician Elska and the theatrical group Porkchop productions later in the summer. Afternoon programs are hosted throughout the week in all branches for ages six through 11.
