Starting this week and continuing through next week, the Kershaw County Senior American Legion baseball team is scheduled to play it one four-game weeks of the season.
Thanks to the constant rain of last week, however, the Post 17 schedule, got asmessy --- and still has at least one change in store --- as the weather was over the past few days.
Last Wednesday’s game at Hartsville fell victim to the weather and was moved to this past Saturday night.
The visiting 17ers used a strong pitching and hitting performance from Grayson King to take a 1-0 win over Hartsville at Kelleytown on Saturday evening for their second straight victory and third in four games this season in League III action. With the win Post 17 is one win shy of equaling its total number of victories from a season ago.
King, a recent North Central graduate and a Francis Marion University signee fired a complete game two-hitter at the hosts. The right-hander fanned seven and did not issue a walk in his nine-inning stint as he improved to 2-0 on the season.
Hartsville scored its lone run in the fourth inning in which it collected both of its base hits.
Offensively, KC managed just three hits in the make-up game with King collecting one of those as his double off the wall plated Broderick Gaither, who got aboard with a walk in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
The other run for the visitors came in the top of the eighth when Blake Serpas reached on a fielders’ choice and scored from first on a three-base error on a ball hit by Russ Radcliff.
Last Friday, Craig Smith’s troops were slated to make the trip along Highway 1 to Cheraw. Due to the day’s constant rain, that game was postponed and will now be played on a yet-to-be determined date.
Beginning Monday, the 17ers’ kick off a four-game week with the first of two trips to Riley Park in Sumter to take on Post 15. In between a Wednesday road trip to Manning-Santee and a Friday contest in Hartsville, KC will squeeze in a Thursday home contest with Cheraw.
Next week, Smith and company will stay at home for all four games which will be played on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights at American Legion Park in Camden. All four contests have a 7 p.m. starting time.
