Lugoff Fire Department Explorer Chief Hunter Brazell (second from left) holds the team’s first place Team Hose Deployment trophy while Explorer Assistant Chief Christina Kirk (second from right) holds her own second place trophy in female Individual Explorer Gear Donning segment. The team, which also includes explorers Hunter Peake (far left) and Lauren Chandler (far right), participated in the annual S.C. Fire Rescue Conference Firefighter Competition in Myrtle Beach June 13.

A team from the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) Explorer Post won a first place ranking June 13 at the annual S.C. Fire Rescue Conference Firefighter Explorer Competition at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The LFD Explorer Team won first place in the state in the Team Hose Deployment Segment. Those on the team included Explorer Chief Hunter Brazell, Explorer Assistant Chief Christina Kirk and explorers Lauren Chandler and Hunter Peake.

All four explorers also competed in the male and female Individual Explorer Gear Donning segments. Kirk earned second place in the state in the female division.

Eight teams and 56 individual explorers competed in the statewide competition that involved team and individual segments of competition. Each explorer that competed received a bag of fire service merchandise donated by various fire equipment vendors as well as a custom challenge coin designed specifically for the explorer competition.

“I am very proud of our explorers and for the outstanding job performed at the conference,” LFD Chief Dennis Ray said. “They displayed a very positive competitive spirit as well as a professional attitude. It is an honor to have the top explorer group in the state at Lugoff Fire, but is more of an honor to have the privilege to train such dedicated young people in the fire service. Lugoff Fire was very well represented at the conference by our explorers and adult staff members.”

Lugoff Fire debuted two new fire trucks at the annual conference this year as well: one KME Rescue Pumper and one FES Air-Light Truck. Both trucks were on display at the conference on the show room floor along with other trucks and fire service vendors from throughout the nation. The S.C. Fire-Rescue Conference ran from June 11 to Saturday and consisted of hands-on and classroom training, vendor hall displays, speaking forums, and a memorial service. The conference is an annual event at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and is held in conjunction with the S.C. Fire Chief’s Conference each June.
