Joe Eason, director of the Florence County Parks and Recreation Department, will become the new director of the Kershaw County Recreation Department. Kershaw County Administrator Vic Carpenter made the announcement earlier this month at Kershaw County Council’s June 11 meeting.

Eason will begin working in Kershaw County July 8. He served as Florence County’s parks and recreation department’s director for 15 years and will end his service there next week. Eason replaces James Davis, who was recently sworn in as a county magistrate judge.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me,” Eason said about his move to Camden. “I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

“I’m looking forward to being in a position where I can first observe and listen to see what needs to be done,” Eason said.

Carpenter referred to Eason as a “recognized leader in the field of Recreation Management in the state.”

“He is exactly the kind of leader that we were looking for in order to continue moving Kershaw County forward,” Carpenter said. “After the years of excellence and dedication that our citizens have grown accustomed to from James Davis, Joe will be worthy successor.”

Eason was named the 2006 S.C. Recreation and Parks Association Professional of the Year and is also responsible for developing the South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association Leadership Enhancement and Development Institute in 2003. Eason has also worked for the Rock Hill YMCA where he first started as youth sports director and later as fitness director. He also worked for the city of Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department where he served as athletics supervisor. Later, Eason became the park supervisor for Cherry Park.

Eason was introduced at Tuesday’s Kershaw County Council meeting. He is a 1985 graduate of Winthrop University and plans to move to Camden.
