A sign outside the existing building where the new Meyer-Thiel Adoption Center will be built shows what it will look at after renovations and additional construction. The new animal shelter location is on Black River Road.

Since announcing plans for the Meyer-Thiel Adoption Center last fall, the Kershaw County Humane Society has raised $1.7 million towards the capital campaign.

“We have been overwhelmed by the financial and moral support we have received from the community” Joanne Schwartz, Vice President of the Kershaw County Humane Society (KCHS) said.

Funding so far has allowed the Humane Society to move forward with its design plans and work with engineers and architects. The new center will benefit both the city and the county.

“A vital and active community adoption center will result in a decrease in the number of unwanted and abandoned animals, which is a great thing for Kershaw County” Kershaw County Administrator Vic Carpenter said.

The Humane Society is especially thankful for the support of Austin and Lane Meyer who pledged $1 million in matching funds for the adoption center and the continued support from Judy Thiel. The new center will provide adoptions and a low cost spay/neuter clinic to boost current efforts.

“How we treat our abandoned animals says everything about our connection with the natural world, which is the ground of our being and the source of our vitality,” Camden Mayor Tony Scully said. “How we embrace those suffering among us, be they animals or humankind, speaks to the state of our hearts. The Meyer Thiel Adoption Center, as with Food for the Soul, the Community Medical Clinic, and KershawHealth, makes a definitive statement to ourselves and to South Carolina about who we are as a people and a community.”
