• With “Lake Wateree season” in full swing and the July 4 holiday approaching, the recent drowning deaths of two people at nearby Lake Murray and a close call at Camden’s Kendall Lake serve as a stark reminder that swimming can end tragically. Safety procedures should always be used, and people should remember that alcohol and swimming don’t make for a good combination.

• Camden has a host of people who are tied to the horse industry, and that has helped make the town what it is. We recently came across one of the best racing lines we’ve ever heard, and it was uttered by Howie Garfinkel, a New Yorker who practically invented the practice of scouting high school basketball players and selling the information to college coaches, which is a huge industry today. “I’m certainly no saint,” said Garfinkel, who admitted to having blown a fair amount of money over the years gambling on horses. “I like following the ponies,” he said, “but my biggest problem is that I usually follow the ponies that are following other ponies.”

• There’s lots of buzz now about the baby born to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West; you probably have read the child was named North, so it’s full name will be North West. Other celebrities have come up with strange monikers for their kids, too. We suppose it’s just a sign of the times, but we point out that it’s nothing new. Decades ago, rocker Frank Zappa named his children Dweezil, Moon Unit, Ahmet and Diva Muffin. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
