Captured county Confederates

In Historic Camden, Nineteenth Century, authors Kirkland and Kennedy included appendices of county citizens in military service during the Civil War. They compiled these appendices from muster rolls, contemporary newspaper reports, survivor recollections and information compiled by the State Historian, Alexander S. Salley Jr. He had also relied upon the works of predecessors, William B. Johnson, William J. Rivers and John P. Thomas.

Kirkland and Kennedy stated that their appendices were incomplete. Since 1926, much additional research and publishing has been done on the topic. Joe Mathis and others have compiled manuscript unpublished information on this topic which may be examined at the Camden Archives and Museum. However, there is yet to be created a complete list of county citizens who were in military service during the Civil War.

One area where a comprehensive and fairly accurate compilation has been created is that of state citizens who were captured during the war. This is contained in Dark Hours, a monumental work authored by Randolph W. Kirkland Jr. and published by the South Carolina Historical Society in 2002. Unfortunately, this work, like that of Salley, Johnson, Rivers and Thomas, does not provide the county of origin of those listed.

The compilation below contains a list by military units of the 66 men Kirkland and Kennedy recorded as being captured in the war. Their compilation often does not list the place and date of capture and the place(s) of imprisonment or if an individual died in prison.

Some of this information from Dark Hours has been added in the compilation which follows. It is most appropriate to do so since Dark Hours author, Randolph W. Kirkland Jr., is the grandson of Thomas J. Kirkland, one of the authors of Historic Camden. In 1995, Kirkland completed his first monumental historical work, Broken Fortunes, a compilation of S.C. men killed in the Civil War.

Some noteworthy facts contained in the compilation which follows are: three county men captured by Sherman on his march through S.C.; seven captured at Gettysburg and 14 at Weldon RR; nine men or 14 percent died in prison. This compilation, as that of Kirkland and Kennedy, is not complete or error free. Ten names found in Kirkland and Kennedy could not be matched with names in Dark Hours due to spelling, military unit listings, etc. These 10 names are noted.
