Last summer, Kelli Murphy traveled across the country to face the best junior girl golfers in America.
Next month, she will only need to head down I-26 to test herself against the premier women’s amateur golfers in the world.
The Elgin resident and rising senior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, was one of 10 players who advanced to the 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. The event will be played over the Country Club of Charleston from Aug. 5-10.
On Monday, Murphy played in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Section Qualifying which was hosted by the Kiawah Island Resort (Cougar Point) and the Auburn commitment fired a 2-under par 70 to finish second and two strokes behind top qualifier Ashlan Ramsey of Milledgeville, Ga.
A five-year letterwinner for the L-E boys’ golf team, Murphy said she is excited to be playing on a Country Club of Charleston course over which she has had success in the past.
“I can’t wait to see how it feels to play with the best of the best on a course I’ve won on a few times,” Murphy said.
Murphy, who went out and came in with a pair of 35s on Monday, was one of five Palmetto State residents to earn a spot in the U.S. Women’s Amateur. The Kiawah Island event was one of 18 national qualifying sites held throughout the country.  This sectional qualifier was conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association on behalf of the United States Golf Association.
The event came on the heels of Murphy’s having won the 57th Carolinas Junior Girls Championship in leading the golf tournament played at Wyboo Golf Club in Manning from start to finish.
Last summer, Murphy traveled to Merced, Cal., and finished in the Elite Eight of the 64th annual USGA Junior Girls’ Championship. She also earned a spot on the winning Carolinas Mid-Atlantic Challenge Team which defeated their counterparts from Maryland and Virginia. Murphy will, again, play for the Carolinas Mid-Atlantic Challenge Team this season.
