And then there was one.
Of the six Dixie Youth and Dixie Boys All-Star baseball teams representing the Kershaw County Recreation Department, just one is left standing.
Jumping out to a 6-0 lead in Monday’s weather-delayed game with York, Kershaw County American advanced into Tuesday’s District 5 tournament championship game with a 6-4 victory over York in a game which was played in Indian Land due to wet grounds at the host site in Lancaster.
The Camden-based KC American squad, coached by Scott Jordan, Darrell Engram and Lindsay Pierce, were scheduled to have played the winner of Tuesday afternoon’s York vs. Lancaster elimination game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday with the winner of the nightcap advancing into the South Carolina State Dixie Boys tournament. KC American, Lancaster and York all have one loss in the double-elimination event.
The survivor of the District 5 event will move on to the state tournament which begins July 20 in Aiken.
KC American battled back in the event, in which rain has pushed things back by five days, from the losers’ bracket. The locals dropped their first game of the tourney to York, 15-4. The American squad stayed alive by scoring three runs in the seventh inning for an 11-10 win over Rock Hill in a game in which the winners trailed at one time by an 8-2 deficit.
After having been rained out Saturday, KC American won the battle of Kershaw County by knocking KC National from the event on Sunday, 7-2, to advance into Monday’s fourth round pairing with York.
KC Northern falls: KC Northern was the final county entry left in Dixie Youth play and the Camden-area team fell to Hartsville Northern in the finals of the Sub A-District 5 finals.
