Cheraw, Lake City bounced from state playoffs

Before the first pitch of the post-season was thrown, controversy cropped up in the South Carolina American Legion Baseball state playoffs.
Early Monday afternoon, it was discovered that League III runner-up Cheraw had failed to register its roster --- which it is ruled to do by June 30 --- and was forced to forfeit its first round playoff series with Beaufort. Minutes later, the same bit of news was discovered regarding Lake City, which was to have faced Sumter in opening round play.
In both instances, Beaufort and Sumter will advance to the second round of the state playoffs without having to play a game or, even an inning.
Cheraw’s being booted from the playoffs affected Kershaw County Post 17 as, since Cheraw did not have a roster on file all season, it, basically, went 0-0 this season. Cheraw took three of five meetings with the 17ers this year, including last Saturday’s playoff game for second place in League III.
Rather than re-seed the Lower State tournament and push back the playoffs until Tuesday with KC being bumped to second and facing a third seed in Beaufort in a best-of-five series, the playoffs went on as set as the locals traveled to Murrells Inlet, which finished second behind Florence in League II.
The winner of the KC Post 17 vs. Murrells Inlet series will meet the winner of the Goose Creek vs. Hartsville series. Goose Creek, the League I champion, took game one with the fourth place finishers from League III, 5-3, on Monday night.
In other Lower State openers on Monday, Florence downed Moncks Corner, 10-2. The winner of that series meets Beaufort in round two. Hilton Head, which was second in League I, handed Conway, the third-place finisher in League II, an 11-5 loss. The winner of that series will meet Sumter in round two next week.
