The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) arrested and charged a Camden man with attempted murder following a knife attack in east Camden Thursday.

According to a KCSO press release and its incident report of the attack, deputies responded to a fight at the Dollar General store in east Camden around 3 p.m. Thursday. An investigator, who was the first to arrive on the scene, found two women standing over a man trying to stop him from bleeding in front of the store.

Witnesses at the scene said a man later identified as Marcus Maurice Dow, 24, of Camden, had started a fight with the 21-year-old victim from Bishopville, cutting and stabbing him. Those witnesses advised deputies that Dow had fled the scene in a silver Infiniti toward Camden. Dow’s car was spotted and stopped not far from the scene on Gardner Street in front of a church. He told deputies that he was heading to the hospital as he, too, had a serious knife wound to his hand. In the report, deputies described Dow’s injury as a laceration on his right hand between his thumb and index finger.

According to the report, after being read his Miranda rights, Dow admitted he was at the Dollar General, but said he was there to get his cell phone from his ex-girlfriend. He said he was confronted by the victim who asked him to step outside. Once outside, Dow said, he pulled the knife on the victim and the two began to fight.

An ambulance transported Dow to KershawHealth.

In the meantime, other EMS personnel at the store were attempting to stabilize the victim, who had life-threatening injuries to his head and torso. Deputies who arrived after the victim had been transported to the hospital reported finding large amounts of blood and broken glass near the front left door to the store.

According to the KCSO report, the victim’s girlfriend said she had learned Dow was on his way to the store, so she ran to the office so he would not find her. She said when Dow arrived, the victim approached Dow and asked to talk to him outside. She said she then ran outside and saw that the victim had a stab wound to his back and that Dow was on top of him, fighting. The woman told deputies she told Dow to stop and get off the victim. She then said she retrieved the knife Dow had used and placed it in a bag so that Dow could not take it with him when he fled.

The victim was ultimately transported to a Columbia hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. A deputy reported that the victim, while being seen at KershawHealth where he was first taken, had suffered several severe lacerations, including one to the left side of his head.

Deputies transported Dow to the Kershaw County Detention Center after he was treated at KershawHealth. He remains in custody on a $200,000 bond and is expected to undergo additional surgery to his hand.

The victim remains in stable, but critical condition, according to the KCSO’s press release.
